I miss making you playlists for your disc drive, so I made you this. I know it’s not the same… but it’s the closest I can get. New mixtape monthly up on my spotify. These first five songs are flawless. “Pin It Down” is such a fantastic riff. When I had the chance to see Madison Cunningham play it live at The Lodge Room in Highland Park, I couldn’t believe that she sang and played all of that guitar at the same time. Jitwam’s “I’m a Rock” is an incredible Sly & The Family Stone style track. The Box Tops’ “The Letter” is an all time favorite of mine. I can never get over the fact that lead singer Alex Chilton is only 16 on that recording. Apparently, he was up all night smoking cigarettes with his girlfriend the night before recording his vocal take. There’s a great video performance of The Box Tops performing this song on a TV show in 1967, and, frustrated that they couldn’t perform it live, they start lip syncing very very badly. It’s a fun watch.

Also on this playlist are the gems “When I’m in Your Arms,” by Cleo Soul, and Jelani Aryeh’s incredible cover of “Angels,” by The XX. The latter is one that feels so good to me. I love the drums and the guitars. It’s such a successful reimagining of a song. Another excellent track on here is “Post-Corona*,” by Ian George, a song I found while reviewing songs for Submithub, and one that was memorable to most of the people who listened to this playlist. “I’ll never wear sweatpants again, Post-Corona.” It’s a great tune by an undiscovered artist.
