Mixtape 38
Mixtape 38
I miss making you playlists for your disc drive, so I made you this. I know it’s not the same… but it’s the closest I can get. New mixtape monthly up on my spotify. Find me there at @jawnmo, and if you’re not on spotify, track list included here for you to burn to a cd and put in your 1996 jeep wrangler and turn up the volume. Have a nice weekend out thereabout
For the longest time, I could not stop listening to Ruger’s “Dior.” Often track 1 on these playlists is the song I want to hear most when I put anything on, and that’s absolutely the case with this. The lines “Bad Man drip to the core” and “Sportscar’s parked in the right spot” were lyrics I couldn’t get enough of. Also included on this playlist are the sun-drenched indie vibes of “Pacific Avenue” from Stonesthrow artist Pearl & the Oysters, and an irresistible groove from Men I Trust, with “Ring of Past.” I’ve dropped in the music video for the latter here - it’s one of my favorite releases of the past year, and the Dazed & Confused style roller skate video is a great vibe.
hidden gems
Vitamin C - Can
This band sounds like few others, especially when you consider the fact that this song came out in 1972. Can is a highly influential Krautrock band, whose work has been heavily sampled (this song is full of great breaks and moments) and has inspired many indie rock artists over the years.
ghostbones - JVLY
This song who won me over with a single line on impermanence that kept having me start the song over again: “you’re like water through hands / I wanna hold you again.”
Dior - Ruger
I’m including this again here because this Nigerian artist is lesser known in the states and this song is just so good. Tell me you don’t have a great time listening to this one. Badman sleek and you know.
Alone Again, Naturally - Gilbert O’Sullivan
One of the saddest, most beautiful songs of all time, “Alone Again, Naturally,” by Gilbert O’Sullivan could hardly be called a hidden gem. I’m only adding it here because I recently saw a clip from an old season of The Simpsons where Comic Book Guy asks for pump up music so that he can go rescue a group of Springfielders, and the radio plays this song. Rather than rescue the group, he slumps down and bursts into tears. It’s one of my favorite uses of a song in media.
